Medicare Part D is for prescription drug coverage. Medicare Prescription Drug Plans are issued through private Medicare-approved insurance companies.
Initial Enrollment Period
You have 7 months to enroll in Medicare Part A and/or Part B and Part D when you're eligible. If you are eligible at 65, the Initial Enrollment Period:
Begins three calendar months before the month you turn 65
Includes the month of your birthday
Extends for three more months after the month you turn 65
After the Initial Enrollment Period, changes to your plan can only be made during the Medicare Fall
Open Enrollment which is October 15th through December 7th every year or if you qualify for a Special Enrollment Period.
During this time you can drop, change or join which will take effect on January 1 of the upcoming year.
Don't go 63 days or more without a Medicare Prescription Drug Plan. If you had and lost your prescription drug coverage from a former employer or other creditable provider, you must join a new plan in fewer than 63 days. If not, you may pay a Part D late enrollment penalty.
You are eligible if:
You are enrolled in Medicare Part A and/or Medicare Part B
